Your plastic surgeon can choose from a variety of locations for the mastopexy incision depending on the patient’s breast size and the degree of ptosis, which is pronounced “toh-sis.” The incision may partially or completely encircle the areola, with or without a vertical extension down towards the base of the breast (creating a lollipop shape), or with an additional incision within the breasts’ under fold (creating an anchor shape). The procedure lasts approximately two to three hours. Patients return home the day of surgery.
Bleeding and swelling are normal post-operative occurrences that may take a few weeks to go away. Your stitches do not need to be removed because they will naturally dissolve beneath the skin and we do not use drains. Following surgery, patients may walk and resume their normal daily activities; however, for two weeks, they should refrain from intense activity as well as heavy lifting and pushing. In about a week, patients can usually resume their non-manual labor jobs. Patients feel that they can resume their preoperative activity level after around one to two months.
